IHG’s InterContinental Brand Set to Redefine Luxury with Brisbane Debut
IHG Hotels & Resorts is preparing to unveil InterContinental Brisbane, a luxury transformation of one of the city’s most iconic buildings. Opening in late June 2025, the hotel will occupy the former Hilton Brisbane in a landmark redevelopment led by ISPT. As the only hotel in Australia designed by modernist architect Harry Seidler, the property will fuse architectural legacy with contemporary luxury, bringing the InterContinental brand to Brisbane for the first time.
In a strategic move to expand its luxury footprint in Australia, IHG Hotels & Resorts, in partnership with ISPT, is preparing to open InterContinental Brisbane this June. The launch marks the brand's debut in the city and represents a significant transformation of the former Hilton Brisbane, located at 150 Elizabeth Street in the heart of Brisbane’s Central Business District.
This long-term management agreement sees IHG take over a property with rich architectural heritage—designed by the iconic Harry Seidler, renowned for his influential role in shaping Australian modernist architecture. The building is the only hotel in the country attributed to Seidler, and its original design will be carefully preserved and integrated into the new InterContinental identity.
Set against the bustling backdrop of Queen Street Mall, the redeveloped property is part of ISPT’s ambitious plan to revitalise the entire precinct, seamlessly blending Wintergarden retail, the Regent Theatre, and the new InterContinental hotel into a dynamic hospitality and lifestyle hub. Over the next two years, the hotel will undergo a meticulous upgrade to align with InterContinental’s luxury hallmarks, focusing on innovation, cultural immersion, and elegant design.
Upon completion, InterContinental Brisbane will feature 321 premium guest rooms, many with panoramic views of the Brisbane skyline. Guests will also have access to four upscale restaurants and bars, expansive conference spaces, and state-of-the-art amenities—positioning the hotel as a leading destination for both corporate and leisure travellers.
According to Cameron Burke, Director of Development at IHG Hotels & Resorts for Australasia & Pacific, the project arrives at a time of significant growth for Brisbane. As the city readies itself for the 2032 Olympic Games, major infrastructure projects and a booming tourism sector are accelerating its emergence as a hospitality hotspot.
Tom Waters, Head of Development at ISPT, highlighted the project’s importance in shaping the city’s future. He emphasized the shared vision between ISPT and IHG to create a luxury experience that not only celebrates the historical significance of the building but also redefines urban placemaking within Brisbane’s evolving skyline.
This marks the third InterContinental property in Queensland, joining InterContinental Hayman Island and InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort. It also expands IHG’s luxury and lifestyle portfolio in Australasia, where the company operates 21 luxury hotels with five more in the pipeline across brands like Kimpton, Vignette Collection, and Hotel Indigo.
