JW Marriott brings mindful safari hospitality to Kenya
JW Marriott has introduced JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp in Solio Game Reserve, Laikipia, Kenya. Set between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges, the camp brings the brand’s wellness-led hospitality into one of Africa’s important conservation landscapes. With 19 tented suites, wildlife experiences, regional design, seasonal dining and a strong connection to local communities, the property is positioned as an intimate luxury safari camp. Its arrival adds a distinctive new address to the growing market for mindful travel and conservation-focused hospitality in Kenya.
JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp is located within the 45,000-acre Solio Game Reserve, a private conservancy known for its long-standing role in rhino conservation. The reserve is home to one of Africa’s largest populations of both black and white rhinos, along with leopards, lions, waterbuck, zebras, Thomson’s gazelles and rich birdlife. This setting gives the camp a strong identity as a place where guests can experience nature at close range while learning about the conservation work that defines the reserve.
Wildlife viewing is central to the stay. Guests can join guided game drives at sunrise and in the late afternoon, while night drives offer a different perspective on the reserve when predators such as leopards, lions and spotted hyenas are most active. The nocturnal landscape may also reveal more elusive species including serval and caracal. Evenings at the camp can be spent around the fire pit, creating a slower and more reflective rhythm after time in the reserve.
The camp’s 19 tented suites, including a two-bedroom suite, have been designed by LW Design with an approach inspired by the quiet presence of the rhino. Low-slung timber and canvas structures sit lightly within the landscape, giving guests privacy and expansive views of Mount Kenya, the Aberdare Mountains, nearby waterholes or open savannah. Roll-up canvas walls create a smooth connection between interior and exterior spaces, while private decks, plunge pools and freestanding indoor baths reinforce the sense of immersion in nature.
The interiors draw strongly on Kenyan craftsmanship and materials. Warm earth tones, soft greens, charcoal hues, woven textiles and hand-carved timber create a calm and contemporary atmosphere. Furnishings and artwork from Kenyan artisans, including Kitengela Glass, Safari Bronze and Ceramiqa, anchor the design in local heritage. Shared spaces include the Map Room, a library, a games room and a retail boutique showcasing contemporary Kenyan art, beadwork and textiles from local makers.
Beyond traditional safari drives, the camp offers guided walking safaris, cycling excursions and birding led by expert guides. Guests can also use professional Canon camera equipment and receive guidance from resident photographers to capture the landscape and wildlife. Bespoke experiences can be arranged on request, including helicopter excursions, trout fishing on Mount Kenya and sunset painting sessions. These activities expand the safari experience beyond vehicle-based wildlife viewing and give guests more ways to connect with the destination.
Dining at JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp is built around seasonality and a strong connection to place. The camp’s signature garden grows herbs, fruits and vegetables that are used directly in the menus. It also serves as the setting for The Garden Table, an intimate multi-course dining experience focused on freshly harvested ingredients. Mavuno, the camp’s signature restaurant, combines Kenyan flavours, global influences and open-fire cooking, while Ember Bar and Lounge offers drinks and sharing plates in a fireside setting.
The beverage programme is also shaped by the surrounding landscape. The camp’s Five Elements cocktail concept draws on smoke, spice, earth, honey and fire, complemented by cold-pressed juices and botanical infusions using fresh local ingredients. This approach connects the food and beverage experience with the wider character of Solio Game Reserve, where nature, craft and storytelling form part of the stay.
Wellness is another defining element of the camp. The Spa by JW offers treatments rooted in regional healing traditions and uses botanicals from Kenyan skincare brand Jani. The signature Solio Passage half-day journey brings together volcanic stone therapies, botanical massage, hydrotherapy and cedar forest bathing. A fitness centre, outdoor pool and quiet reflection spaces complete the wellness offer, giving guests opportunities to rest, recover and reset within the natural setting.
The camp’s stewardship approach is closely tied to its position inside Solio Game Reserve. Guests can visit the Solio Rhino Orphanage to learn about the rehabilitation of orphaned rhino calves and other wildlife before their return to the conservancy. The property also supports community initiatives through the Lazizi Welfare Foundation, including a daily meal programme at Riacho Comprehensive School, and works with the Solio Women’s Empowerment Project, whose handcrafted items are incorporated into the guest experience and sold through the camp.
Sustainability is embedded in the camp’s operations through solar energy, rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, composting, recycling and selective upcycling. The property also has a strong local employment focus, with 95 percent of its workforce made up of Kenyan nationals. Access is available through Nanyuki Airstrip, reached by a short flight from Wilson Airport, followed by a road transfer. Private charter flights to Solio Ranch Airstrip can also bring guests closer to the camp, with a short onward drive completing the journey.
