JW Marriott creates a safari sanctuary in Kenya
JW Marriott has introduced JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp in Solio Game Reserve, Laikipia, Kenya. The camp is set between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges, creating a wellness-focused safari retreat shaped by wildlife, landscape and quiet luxury. With only 19 tented suites, the property is designed around privacy, nature and a slower style of travel. Its arrival brings the JW Marriott brand into one of Kenya’s most meaningful conservation settings.
JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp is located within Solio Game Reserve, a 45,000-acre private conservancy recognised for its long-standing role in rhino conservation. The reserve is home to one of Africa’s largest populations of both black and white rhinos, alongside leopards, lions, waterbuck, zebras, Thomson’s gazelles and abundant birdlife. This setting gives the camp a strong identity as both a luxury safari camp and a destination connected with responsible tourism and wildlife protection.
The guest experience is built around wildlife viewing throughout the day. Guided game drives take place at sunrise and in the late afternoon, while night drives offer a different view of the reserve when predators such as leopards, lions and spotted hyenas are active. Guests may also encounter elusive nocturnal species including serval and caracal. Evenings can be spent at the camp around the fire pit, creating a quieter way to reflect on the day’s safari experiences.
The camp’s design has been created by LW Design and is inspired by the quiet presence of the rhino. Its 19 tented suites, including a two-bedroom suite, are positioned discreetly to provide privacy and sweeping views of Mount Kenya, the Aberdare Mountains, nearby waterholes or open savannah. Low-slung timber and canvas structures sit lightly within the landscape, while roll-up canvas walls connect the interiors with the sounds and views of the conservancy. Private decks, plunge pools and freestanding indoor baths add to the sense of reflective luxury.
Inside the suites and shared spaces, the design draws on Kenyan craft and local materials. Warm earth tones, soft greens, charcoal hues, woven textiles and hand-carved timber create a calming contemporary atmosphere. Furnishings and artwork from Kenyan artisans, including Kitengela Glass, Safari Bronze and Ceramiqa, bring a strong local character to the camp. Shared spaces include a Map Room, a library, a games room and a retail boutique showcasing contemporary Kenyan art and craft.
Beyond traditional game drives, the camp offers a wide range of experiences that connect guests with the reserve. Guided walking safaris, cycling excursions and birding are led by expert guides, with more than 300 recorded bird species in the area. Photography is also central to the experience, with access to professional Canon camera equipment and guidance from resident photographers. Bespoke activities can include helicopter excursions, trout fishing on Mount Kenya and sunset painting sessions.
Dining at JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp is shaped by seasonality and place. The camp’s signature garden grows herbs, fruits and vegetables that are used directly in menus and also serves as the setting for The Garden Table, an intimate multi-course dining experience. Mavuno, the signature restaurant, combines Kenyan flavours, global influences and open-fire cooking. Ember Bar and Lounge offers a fireside setting for drinks and sharing plates, while the camp’s cocktail programme draws on smoke, spice, earth, honey and fire.
Wellness is a core part of the camp’s positioning. The Spa by JW offers treatments rooted in regional healing traditions and highland botanicals, using products from Kenyan skincare brand Jani. Ingredients such as highland moringa, wild aloe, Laikipia honey, cedar and clove are incorporated into restorative therapies. The signature Solio Passage half-day experience brings together volcanic stone therapies, botanical massage, a glacial hydrotherapy soak and cedar forest bathing. A fully equipped fitness centre, outdoor pool and quiet reflection spaces further support the camp’s wellness offer.
The camp’s approach to stewardship is closely tied to its location in Solio Game Reserve. Guests can visit the Solio Rhino Orphanage to learn about the rehabilitation of orphaned rhino calves and other wildlife before their return to the conservancy. The property also contributes to local initiatives through the Lazizi Welfare Foundation, including a daily meal programme at Riacho Comprehensive School, and supports the Solio Women’s Empowerment Project, where women from surrounding communities create handcrafted items integrated into the guest experience.
Sustainability is embedded across the camp’s operations. The property uses solar energy infrastructure, rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling systems, while waste is managed through reuse, recycling, repurposing, composting and selective upcycling. The camp also has a strong local employment focus, with 95 percent of its workforce made up of Kenyan nationals. Located near Nanyuki Airstrip, the camp can be reached by a short flight from Wilson Airport or by road from Nairobi, with private charter access also available to Solio Ranch Airstrip.
