Polo Hotels signs first Mizoram property
Polo Hotels & Resorts has signed a concession agreement with the government of Mizoram to develop Polo Hotel Aizawl, marking the group’s first property in the Indian state. The project will involve the redevelopment of Chaltlang Tourist Lodge in Aizawl into a 4-star or higher category hotel. Structured under a public-private partnership model, the development will add branded hospitality infrastructure to one of Northeast India’s emerging tourism markets. The hotel is planned with 60 rooms and the potential to add 40 more in the future.
The project places Polo Hotels & Resorts in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram and a destination with growing potential for tourism, business travel and regional development. As interest in Northeast India continues to rise, quality hotel supply is becoming increasingly important for states seeking to attract visitors, events and investment. The redevelopment of an existing tourist lodge into an upgraded hotel product supports that wider hospitality need.
The agreement covers an initial concession period of 30 years, with the possibility of two further extensions of 10 years each. Under the structure, Polo Hotels & Resorts will develop and operate the property, while land ownership will remain with the state government. The government is expected to hand over the project site to the company within 45 days of signing.
The planned hotel will include dining outlets, a lounge, swimming pool, banquet halls, meeting rooms and a fitness centre. This amenity mix gives the future property relevance across several demand segments, including leisure travellers, business visitors, government-related travel, events, social gatherings and meetings. The inclusion of banqueting and meeting facilities also positions the hotel to support local and regional functions in Aizawl.
The project was initiated by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region in collaboration with the state’s Planning and Programme Implementation Department. This underlines the role of hospitality development in broader regional economic planning. By improving accommodation standards, the project can contribute to tourism growth, employment generation and destination readiness.
For Polo Hotels & Resorts, the signing strengthens its focus on Northeast India, where the group already has a regional hospitality identity. The company is based in Shillong and is led by founder and chief executive officer Deval Tibrewalla. Its expansion into Mizoram reflects a strategy of building hospitality experiences in markets with cultural richness, natural appeal and underdeveloped branded hotel supply.
The agreement was signed at the Chief Minister’s Office by tourism secretary Vanlaldina Fanai and Prashant Gupta, Chief Financial Officer and whole-time director of Hotel Polo Towers. Their involvement reflects the institutional and operational importance of the project for both the government and the hospitality group.
The future Polo Hotel Aizawl is expected to contribute to the state’s tourism ecosystem by offering a more formal hotel product in the capital. As travellers increasingly look beyond India’s traditional destinations, states such as Mizoram have an opportunity to build stronger visibility through improved infrastructure, destination marketing and professional hospitality services.
With 60 planned rooms, scope for further expansion, a 30-year concession structure and facilities for dining, wellness, meetings and events, Polo Hotel Aizawl represents a significant step for branded hospitality in Mizoram. The project gives Polo Hotels & Resorts a new foothold in the state while supporting the long-term development of Aizawl as a gateway to the wider Northeast.
