Accor and Orascom Development Egypt have signed an agreement to transform the existing Mövenpick El Gouna into Sofitel El Gouna Resort, a new luxury resort on Egypt’s Red Sea coast. The property will undergo an extensive phased renovation starting in 2027 and is being positioned as a flagship destination for the Sofitel brand in Egypt. Developed in partnership with Arabian Peninsula Hospitality, the project reflects a broader push to strengthen high-end hospitality in El Gouna. It also reinforces the destination’s growing status as a year-round hub for lifestyle, culture and premium travel.

The signing gives Sofitel a prominent new project in one of Egypt’s most distinctive coastal destinations. Located in El Gouna Red Sea, the future resort will be set on a rare beachfront peninsula with both sea and lagoon access, giving it a standout position within the town’s wider hospitality landscape. This location is central to the project’s appeal, as El Gouna has evolved over more than three decades into an integrated town known for waterfront living, marina culture, distinctive architecture and an international community representing more than 50 nationalities. With around one million visitors each year, more than 18 hotels, over 100 dining concepts, schools, a hospital and thriving business hubs, the destination is being presented not just as a resort town, but as a place where people live, work, invest and return.

Once renovated, Sofitel El Gouna Resort will feature 420 rooms and suites, all redesigned to express the brand’s signature French art de vivre while drawing on local Egyptian inspiration. The interiors are expected to combine contemporary sophistication with subtle references to Egyptian heritage, creating a refined and immersive atmosphere suited to an international clientele. The resort will also introduce a broad culinary offering, celebrating both local flavors and global expectations, alongside an extensive range of leisure and wellness facilities. These will include a spacious spa, a fitness center, and outdoor spaces designed to make full use of the site’s natural surroundings.

The hotel is also being positioned beyond the classic leisure market. Dedicated meeting and event spaces will form part of the offer, giving Sofitel El Gouna Resort the ability to attract both business travelers and holidaymakers looking for a more elevated and distinctive stay on the Red Sea. In practical terms, this makes the project a large-scale full-service resort rather than a narrowly defined beachfront retreat. That broader positioning is especially important as Egypt’s hospitality market continues to shift toward more experiential and high-end offerings.

For Accor, the conversion is also a strategic brand move. The new resort will further strengthen Sofitel’s presence in Egypt, adding to the brand’s existing network and supporting its wider ambition to grow in key luxury markets. At the same time, the project aligns with the ongoing evolution of the Red Sea Riviera, where rising international demand and sustained tourism growth are creating space for more refined hospitality concepts. In that context, Sofitel El Gouna Resort is being shaped not simply as another hotel opening, but as a defining new address intended to blend French elegance, local authenticity and the distinctive lifestyle identity of El Gouna.
