Sofitel London St James completes signature suite renovation with Pierre-Yves Rochon
Sofitel London St James has completed the renovation of its six signature suites, marking the latest stage in a wider transformation of one of London’s luxury hotels. The project includes the official debut of Suite 70 and the Opera Suite, both designed by Paris-based interior architecture studio Pierre-Yves Rochon. Four Prestige Suites are also now open and available to book, giving the property a fully renewed top-tier accommodation offer. The renovation also forms part of a broader multi-year investment program across Sofitel’s flagship properties worldwide.
At the heart of the relaunch is Suite 70, a design-led tribute to the creative and cultural energy of the 1970s. Its visual identity is built around bold contrasts in orange, deep green, brown, black and white, with details inspired by the era’s music, stage design and graphic language. The suite includes bespoke bedside tables that extend into dressing tables, carpets and rugs by Edition 169, and bathroom elements by Devon & Devon, including the My Water Love vanity. Pierre Paulin furniture appears throughout, while textiles and décor developed with Gallery B add further depth through custom wallcoverings and fabrics. A standout feature is the Experience Bar, designed as a concert trunk with vinyl-lined inner doors, alongside wall art inspired by 1970s concert posters and album covers, a vintage-style record player and a saxophone.
The Opera Suite takes a softer and more elegant approach to the same decade. Measuring 109 square metres and overlooking Waterloo Place, it uses a palette of nude, pale pink, taupe, camel and ivory, accented with red. The furniture mix includes more pieces by Pierre Paulin alongside Knoll designs such as the Tulip chair. A pale pink suede headboard inspired by 1970s sculptural forms sits beside a sculptural in-room bar, while bespoke furniture, a suspended library and a reintegrated mirror complete the composition. Across all six renovated suites, Sofitel London St James has introduced a bespoke art collection curated by VISTO, featuring works by emerging and established artists that reflect both London in the 1970s and the hotel’s French heritage.
The suite renewal is strategically important because it links the hotel’s local identity to the wider repositioning of the Sofitel brand. According to the source material, the reimagining of Sofitel London St James sits within a global investment program that has recently included Sofitel New York, Sofitel Montreal Golden Mile and Sofitel Sydney Wentworth, while other recent openings and renovations span Riyadh, Cairo and Cotonou. Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Ipanema is also scheduled to reopen in late 2026.
