Travelodge Acquires 11 UK Hotels in Expansion Drive
Travelodge, the UK’s pioneering budget hotel brand, has announced the acquisition of 11 hotels across the country as part of its ongoing development growth strategy, which includes a focus on rebrand opportunities. With a current portfolio of over 600 hotels across the UK, Ireland, and Spain, the company continues to expand its footprint, aiming to meet growing demand for affordable accommodation in key regional markets.
In a move to solidify its position as a leading budget hospitality brand, Travelodge has agreed to acquire 11 new properties across the UK, adding to its UK-based estate of 588 hotels. This acquisition aligns with the company’s strategy of targeting rebrand opportunities to support expansion in both the UK and Spain, while also rebalancing its freehold and leasehold asset mix.
Nine of the newly acquired hotels are former Hotel Campanile properties, collectively offering 951 rooms. Five of these are being acquired on a freehold basis, with the remaining four secured under long leasehold agreements. Located in Birmingham, Bradford, Dartford, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Northampton, Milton Keynes, and Swindon, these additions bolster Travelodge’s regional coverage and open opportunities for future refurbishment and operational value creation.
Additionally, Travelodge has secured two more properties in Bromsgrove and Wakefield. The Bromsgrove hotel, a 43-room former Ibis, has been leased for 25 years and is currently undergoing a full Travelodge-branded refit, scheduled to open in May 2025. The Wakefield property, a 74-room former independent hotel (CitiLodge), will also be refitted to meet brand standards and is expected to open in August 2025, upon which Travelodge will assume a new 25-year lease.
These strategic acquisitions come on the heels of another recent rebrand success: a former Ibis hotel in Bromley Town Centre, which reopened last month after being fully redesigned to reflect the Travelodge brand identity.
Steve Bennett, Chief Property and Development Officer at Travelodge, emphasized that the acquisitions are central to the company’s broader UK development strategy, which prioritizes estate optimization and the identification of high-potential rebrand opportunities. Bennett confirmed that Travelodge has plans to open over 300 additional hotels across the UK and is actively seeking prime sites to fulfill this growth ambition.
The recent acquisitions not only strengthen Travelodge’s position in key UK cities but also reflect its long-term commitment to value-driven hospitality, tailored for business and leisure travelers alike. With a mix of freehold and long-leasehold arrangements, Travelodge continues to enhance its operational flexibility and asset portfolio.
