Travelodge Expands in Essex with Opening of First Hotel in Harwich
Travelodge, the UK’s first budget hotel brand, has officially opened its first property in Harwich, expanding its nationwide portfolio to over 600 hotels. The new 68-room Travelodge Harwich forms part of a wider mixed-use development at Portside Retail Park, delivered in partnership with The Burney Group, marking another step in the company’s ongoing regional growth strategy.
The newly built hotel brings Travelodge’s next-generation design to the historic port town, featuring modern, comfortable rooms and a contemporary reception area designed for both business and leisure travellers. On-site parking and proximity to key transport links make the hotel an ideal base for guests visiting Harwich or travelling through the nearby Harwich International Port. Located just a short drive from Harwich International railway station, with direct services to Colchester and London Liverpool Street, the property is also just six minutes from ferry connections to the Hook of Holland, offering convenient access to Rotterdam, The Hague, and Amsterdam.
The Portside Retail Park development represents a major investment in the local area, combining the new Travelodge hotel with additional retail and hospitality facilities. The site includes three Drive-Thrus for Starbucks, KFC, and Burger King, two new retail stores for Howdens and Screwfix, an Air Rescue Centre, and eight electric vehicle (EV) charging points, reflecting a commitment to modern infrastructure and sustainability.
Guests staying at Travelodge Harwich can explore the town’s maritime heritage and coastal charm, with nearby attractions including Ha’penny Pier, Dovercourt Boating Lake, and Dovercourt Bay Beach, located just two miles away. The location is ideal for families seeking seaside escapes as well as travellers connecting to continental Europe via the town’s port.
The project was managed by Sam Turner of Carter Jonas, acting as Travelodge’s Development Manager, ensuring that the new hotel aligns with the brand’s latest design standards and operational model. With this opening, Travelodge continues its strategy of expanding affordable accommodation across key UK transport and leisure hubs, supporting both domestic tourism and business travel.
